Photo detail

Sunscald commonly damages thin-barked trees in Arizona. This environmental stress kills the living tissue within and under the bark resulting in dead areas on the south or west side of the tree’s trunk, above left. Trees can be protected by wrapping, upper right, or painting the trunk with whitewash or white tree trunk paint, lower right.
