After decades of listening to the lawnmower, loud music, city traffic or noisy machinery, the human ear often begins to falter. Hearing loss affects an estimated 30 to 35 percent of Americans between 65 and 75 years old, and 40 to 50 percent of adults age 75 and older, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (www.nidcd.nih.gov).
