GLENDALE — Every team enters training camp with optimism. The slate is clean, no losses to tarnish the outlook, every NHL team starting at the same place.
DENVER — Kyle Freeland got in on the fun at the plate, too, for the Colorado Rockies. Freeland pitched effectively into the seventh and had two hits, and the Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-3 on Thursday to extend their NL West lead.
TEMPE — The Washington Redskins shredded the Arizona Cardinals for 182 yards on the ground in their season opener, most of any team in the NFL last week.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Aaron Donald is his own worst critic. Nothing is going to change that, not even a contract extension that briefly made the Los Angeles Rams’ All-Pro lineman the highest-paid defender in NFL history.
PRESCOTT VALLEY — With four of the seven Grand Canyon region football teams scoring 50-plus points against their opponents last Friday night, Bradshaw Mountain only scored 42, but still managed to hold on to the No. 1 spot in the Grand Canyon Media Football Poll, released Wednesday afternoon.
Junior College Volleyball
PHOENIX — Yavapai College’s volleyball team has now lost its first two ACCAC matches of the 2018 season after falling, 3-2, at NJCAA Division II No. 8-ranked South Mountain Community College Wednesday, Sept. 12.
DENVER — DJ LeMahieu hit a two-run homer off Yoshihisa Hirano in the ninth inning, and the NL West-leading Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Wednesday night.
Arizona was supposed to be the team in the Grand Canyon State that would have the easiest time transitioning to a new coach. Kevin Sumlin was taking over a program that had a Heisman Trophy front-runner, an explosive offense and the potential to be better on defense.
NEW YORK — Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and Aaron Nola are going pitch for pitch in the NL Cy Young Award race. Problem is, that prize might not do the trio justice. Not according to baseball's advanced analytics.
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer isn't buying it. The Green Bay Packers can say all they want that quarterback Aaron Rodgers is day to day with a knee injury. The two-time NFL MVP will be given the whole week to get ready for Sunday's game against Minnesota, coach Mike McCarthy said.
CINCINNATI — Andy Dalton came to the line on fourth-and-12 from the Baltimore 49-yard line. He knew it could be the final play of the Bengals' losing season — and maybe of Marvin Lewis' coaching career in Cincinnati, too.
After a closer-than-expected win over Utah State in the season opener, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio pointed out that this was nothing new for the Spartans.
Tee It Up
I think we all can agree that we play golf because it is a challenge and a never-ending quest for some common goals. Some of the common goals that I hear a lot from students is that they want to be consistent, hit the ball farther, improve their accuracy, and have fun.
There's already a somewhat surprising development early in the Pac-12 season. The top two backs aren't named Love and Gaskin, but instead Jefferson and Pierce. And they're from Oregon State.
PRESCOTT VALLEY — Through its first five power-point matches, Bradshaw Mountain’s volleyball team has shown the camaraderie, mettle and confidence of a region championship-caliber squad.
Prep Mountain Biking
FLAGSTAFF — Prescott’s Division I mountain biking team opened the 2018 season with an impressive statement, winning the Arizona Interscholastic Cycling League’s (AICL) first race of the 2018 season at Fort Tuthill County Park.
Local Sports in Brief
The sixth annual McCarley Cup Golf Tournament was held Sept. 3, with the Antelope Hills men’s club defeating Mile High men’s club in match play, 40-1/2 to 39-1/2. Eighty players split into two-man teams, with six best-ball holes and six alternate shot holes keeping them busy.
DENVER — Ketel Marte drove in four runs, including a two-out, two-run triple to break a sixth-inning tie, reliever Yoshihisa Hirano helped Arizona weather a ninth-inning scare for his first big league save and the Diamondbacks pulled closer in the NL West standings by beating the first-place Colorado Rockies 6-3 on Tuesday night.
TEMPE — The knock on Herm Edwards’ hiring at Arizona State was his time away from the game. Edwards had not coached since being fired by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008 and spent eight years at ESPN, so the thinking was that there was no way he could be successful as a college coach.
NEW YORK — When Serena Williams told the umpire at the U.S. Open final that he owed her an apology, that he had stolen something from her, and then she got penalized for her words, Breea Willingham could relate to her frustration and anger.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — A woman has filed a lawsuit against Michigan State University, saying she became pregnant after she was drugged and raped by Larry Nassar when he was a medical student in 1992 but that campus police refused to investigate.
Beyond the Lines
On Sept. 3, 2003, federal agents raided BALCO, the San Francisco Bay Area Laboratory that provided performance enhancing drugs to several athletes.
INDIANAPOLIS — First, Brad Keselowski figured out the secret to restarting at the Brickyard 400.
DETROIT — Sam Darnold made a stellar debut despite throwing a pick-6 on his first NFL pass and the New York Jets intercepted five passes while routing the Detroit Lions 48-17 in their season opener Monday night.
DENVER — Trevor Story hit a three-run homer during a six-run fifth inning, German Marquez struck out 11 over seven masterful innings and the NL West-leading Colorado Rockies gained more separation with a 13-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.
