Arizona History: Feb. 21-27

On Feb. 22, 1890, the Walnut Grove Dam on the Hassayampa River broke after heavy rains, causing the loss of 50 lives. The Walnut Grove Dam site is between Crown King and Yarnell, south of Prescott. The Weekly Journal-Miner reported in its Feb. 26, 1890 edition that $3 million to $4 million worth of property was destroyed in minutes, and the disaster “affects not only Yavapai County and the territory of Arizona, but the entire arid belt of the great Southwest.” (Courier archives)
