Obituary: Charles Cheston Vroom

Charles Cheston Vroom; It is with great sadness to report that Charles Cheston Vroom passed at his home in Prescott, Arizona with his loving wife by his side, November 26, 2021.

Charles was born three months premature, January 3, 1935. He grew up in a home built by his father and uncle in Oldwick, New Jersey with his older brother, Roger Vroom and parents Catherine Cheston and John Robert Vroom.

He preferred horseback riding to driving a car, hunting and fishing to school. After graduation, he joined the Air Force where he served as an electrical mechanic.

Charles met his beautiful wife at a friend’s wedding. While there, he told a friend that Joan would be his wife someday. Joan wasn’t sure about that; their first date included her younger sister. After the movies, Joan had a change of heart and sent her sister home.

In 1962, Joan, a Registered Nurse and Chuck, employed at Pan Am Airline, made their promise to honor and love each other all the days of their lives.

Soon they moved to Long Island, New York, where they raised two children. When Chuck retired, they moved to Prescott, AZ.

Chuck and Joan together enjoyed gardening, housekeeping, hiking, traveling and camping in their VW camper .

Chuck’s hobbies were many; scuba diving, bike club, photography, painting, muzzle loading, hunting, jewelry making, scrimshaw, knife making, leather work, canoeing, inventing or improving things (he would say “I can make that better” and he did) and reading.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan Irene (Maloney) Vroom, his older brother, Roger Vroom (Patsy), son, Robert Charles (Sherri) and Daughter Ann Catherine Vroom (Jerry). He had six grand children: Catherine Ann Smith, Mathew Jacob Smith, Sean Robert Vroom, Charles Thomas Smith, Ashley Primrose Vroom, and Emily Amanda Vroom.

He was preceded in death by his mother Catherine Cheston Vroom and his father John Robert Vroom.

His Family will be honoring his memory privately. He was a private man who touched many with his passion for life. He will be in our hearts forever and will be greatly missed.

Information provided by the family.
