'TROUBLESOME' SURGES

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, warned members of Congress Tuesday, June 23, of a "disturbing" uptick of infections in some states, testifying that the coronavirus pandemic is far from over. He and other U.S. health officials told lawmakers that the next couple of weeks will be critical in our nation's ability to address surges happening in Florida, Texas, Arizona and other states, the YCCHS release said.

Fauci said the surges in other states is “very troublesome to me.”

Fauci also said that the country needed to "establish a system" to respond to future outbreaks. He attributed the rapid spread to the contagiousness of the virus, and to extensive world travel by infected people. COVID’s broad range of severity, from no symptoms at all to critical illness and death, with lung damage, intense immune responses and clotting disorders that have caused strokes even in young people, as well as a separate inflammatory syndrome causing severe illness in some children.

Fauci told the panel that the National Institutes of Health was "mounting a major effort" in collaborating with public and private partners to conduct vaccine trials "that harmonize with each other." He said multiple vaccines are being developed, and that one vaccine would enter phase three of testing in July.

"Although you can never guarantee, at all, the safety and efficacy of a vaccine until you actually test it in the field, we feel cautiously optimistic," Fauci said. He expressed confidence that a vaccine could be ready by the end of this year or early 2021, saying "it's when and not if."
