Letter: Mutual respect!
A reader wrote in preaching love, “Something that truly amazes me is the time people waste in our community holding signs supporting our president or hating him.” This misses the point entirely. We who are opposed to this president don’t hate him, we dislike what he represents. Many of us are retired and already have done public service in health care, law, social welfare, science and in many areas that have contributed to the care and concern of others.
Every week we have someone approach us who attacks us verbally and so we naturally respond. One day we were approached by someone who after we bantered back and forth getting nowhere asked to go over to the courthouse lawn to sit down and talk calmly. What I did was simply listen to him for at least 10 minutes to see what his concerns were. I did learn a few things.
What I found was it allowed him to speak his mind and see in me someone who also had a caring presence, enough to grant me the same respect I gave him. That’s what love is all about. Listening! It lasted about 25 minutes. At the end of our protest, he came back over and gave me a fist bump of approval.
You see, if I had thrown my sign down this other person and I would have never connected. In the future if I see him again, we will have developed a true friendship.
