Authorities believe they know the identity of a dead body recently discovered in a remote area outside of Cottonwood.

A hunter reported finding the body south of Odgen Ranch Road and well west of Highway 260 on Oct. 19, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO). The body was partially concealed by brush.

Based on preliminary findings, including tattoo comparisons, detectives said the body is likely that of Spencer Morton, a 43-year-old homeless Cottonwood man who was reported missing by friends and family on Sept. 2.

The remains were released to the Yavapai County Medical Examiner, who is in the process of determining cause of death and confirming identity based on medical records, YCSO reported.
