Letter: Gun ban statistics

Editor:

I have to take issue with the editorial by John Micek on O’Rourke’s call for a ban on AR- and AK-style rifles.

The statistics about the gun ban, 1994 - 2004 and how after the ban the killings went up, this is true. Before and during the ban, there was no appreciative increase in the murder rate!

The weekend in El Paso there was 40 shootings in Chicago and 7 deaths! There was nothing in the news about this as it doesn’t fit the left’s narrative!

Every weekend there are around 100 shootings in several cities across the country by handguns. In the cities with the strictest gun laws, only the citizens have been unarmed, unable to defend themselves.

Long guns are used in less than 1% of shootings, but that’s doesn’t fit the left’s attempt to disarm the public.

Any shootings are sad, but the real problem is criminals with handguns not purchased through a gun dealer and not one single law passed had any effect on these guns.

The laws only affect law-abiding citizens and still have no consequences for criminals unless they’re caught in the act of committing a crime with a gun.

There are over 3 million AR- and AK- type guns in the US. If they were a problem, you would know it!
