Rumor Patrol: Fry’s adding more self-check machines, not eliminating cashiers

Fake news creeping through the tri-city area that Fry’s food markets are eliminating cashiers is not true, the corporate spokesperson said Friday.

“Our goal at Fry’s is to provide a seamless shopping experience for our customers,” said Pam Giannonatti, Kroger Corporate Affairs manager — Fry’s Division, “giving them more options for the way they like to shop.”

While Fry’s has added additional self-checkouts, it is not eliminating regular registers, she said. “We like to give our customers options on the way they can shop. They can go through a regular register, use self-checkout, Pickup or delivery,” Giannonatti added.

Fry’s has three local stores: Prescott on Miller Valley Road and Fair Street; Prescott on North Willow Creek Road; and Prescott Valley on Glassford Hill Road.

Similarly, a Fry’s competitor, Safeway, has put self-check machines back in its lineup. Safeway has four locations in the tri-city area: Prescott on White Spar; Prescott on Willow Creek Road; Prescott Valley on Highway 69; and Chino Valley on Highway 89.

After the last ownership change, Safeway removed some or all self-check machines and customers complained about long lines. Management said last week that while it was a corporate decision, now the machines are back.
