Yavapai softball ends regular season as ACCAC runner-up

CHANDLER — Although Yavapai College’s softball team couldn’t capture a third straight ACCAC regular-season crown on Saturday, May 4, the Roughriders will carry the No. 2 seed into the NJCAA Region 1, Division I tournament.
NJCAA D-I No. 11-ranked Yavapai defeated Chandler-Gilbert Community College, 12-6, in Game 1 and lost, 8-6, in Game 2 of its 2019 season finale to finish the regular season with a 37-11 conference record.
No. 8 Arizona Western, which clinched the regular-season conference title, will play host to regionals as the No. 1 seed Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, in Yuma.
On Saturday for visiting Yavapai, starting pitcher Shaye Pinner went the distance in Game 1, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits, striking out one and walking four in seven innings for the victory.
At the dish, the Roughriders’ Kylie Brown led the charge, going 2 for 3 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Mikayla Marquez followed, going 3 for 6 with an RBI and a run scored. Gabie Krueger (three-run double) and Shaylee Alani (2 for 5, two runs scored, two RBIs) also contributed.
Yavapai heads to the Region 1 tournament this week in Yuma. The region winner automatically qualifies for the NJCAA D-I Softball Championship tournament May 22-25 in St. George, Utah.
