Letter: Thanks for texting ban
It was very rewarding to read in the April 18 Daily Courier that Senate Bill 2318 regarding the comprehensive state ban on texting and driving passed and that Republican Reps. Noel Campbell and Steve Pierce, and Senate President Karen Fann had the courage and wisdom to cross party lines and vote for passage of a bill that has been a long time in coming; Prescott and other cities have already put into place similar legislation.
Nonetheless, as the headline in that day’s Daily Courier stated: “Finally, Lawmakers OK Cell Phone Bill”. Many Republican legislators chose to cross party lines and supported this action. They are to be commended for “voting their consciousnesses”.
I am extremely disappointed in the legislators who chose not to support this bill. All of those voting no were Republicans. All Democratic legislators voted for passage.
I am in the process of contacting each and every representative and senator who voted against HB 2318 and am asking the following question: “What was your reason(s) for not passing this legislation knowing that many injuries and deaths will be prevented by effective education and enforcement of this bill?” As of this writing, I have not received a single response; hopefully, some of these Legislators will exhibit enough transparency to offer an answer to my question. I will inform you, Prescott Citizens, of responses (if any) in a future letter to the Editor.
Finally, a great big thanks to our Prescott leaders who had the insight to pass a local ordinance regarding texting and driving; perhaps our State Legislators will lead the way on the next important issue affecting our Citizenry.
