Letter: Planned Parenthood defunding

Editor:

Another day in Trumpland. Case in point; The latest attack on women, families and children who will be made to suffer further by the baseless defunding of Planned Parenthood. As a nurse, mother and equal rights activist, I am ashamed of the disinformation campaign launched by the conservatives against an organization that is the prime provider of women’s health care for low-income women.

Planned Parenthood has NEVER been paid under Title X for abortions. Rather Title X grants subsidize birth control, STD and cancer screenings, all preventative and emergent care; 81 percent of Planned Parenthood centers provide same-day emergency contraceptives, access to IUDs and birth control. In 229 counties across the nation, Planned Parenthood serves the majority of low-income women who, otherwise, would have no access to care. Yes, they also provide wanted abortion counseling.

Thanks to our local “compassionate conservatives” both our Planned Parenthood centers have been driven out of town. The closest center, in Flagstaff, is overburdened and unable to take up the slack. During nursing school, I was privileged to be treated for free by informed and dedicated employees at Planned Parenthood. It was my lifeline and when I graduated from nursing school, I volunteered weekly at the free clinic.

Yavapai County Health Services does have a low-cost women’s clinic that provides care; yet, it cannot replace the timely services provided by Planned Parenthood. Stop President Trump’s gag rule that prohibits even the mention of abortion in the spectrum of care. Stop unwanted pregnancies, financial hardship and the suffering of low-income families. Rescind Trump’s cruel gag rule and advocate Title X funding for Planned Parenthood.
