Prescott man shot during alleged burglary of estranged wife’s home
Suspect hospitalized in Phoenix, expected to survive
Police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound in the back yard of a Prescott home after he allegedly attempted to break into his estranged wife’s home early Sunday morning, March 3.
Prescott Police Department (PPD) officers responded to reports of the alleged burglary attempt in the 600 block of La Paloma Lane at about 3:52 a.m., according to a PPD news release. They were told by the reporting party that her estranged husband, Ryan Welch, 27, of Prescott had tried to force his way into her house, but Kyle Fox, 32, of Prescott Valley, was inside the home at the time and shot Welch with a handgun to prevent him from entering.
Fox told officers that Welch fled the scene on foot. A short time later, a 911 call was received from a resident in a nearby neighborhood that someone was in their backyard and knocking on the door. Police searched the area and found Welch hiding in a back yard, PPD reported.
Welch was taken into custody and immediately treated for his wounds, said Dave Fuller, PPD spokesperson. He was later flown to a Phoenix-area hospital for medical treatment.
“His injuries are not expected to be life threatening,” Fuller said. “Welch is expected to be booked for several felonies upon his release from the hospital.”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, Fuller said.
