Fat rat gets stuck in manhole cover in Germany, rescued by firefighters

BENTHEIM, Germany — A video of a fat rat being rescued from a manhole cover has gone viral in Germany.

According to a Facebook post by a local nonprofit animal group called Berufstierrettung Rhein Neckar, volunteer firefighters came to the animal's rescue in Bentheim, Germany on Saturday.

The video shows the firefighters using an adjustable-loop pole to safely free the rat.

Once free, the rat was released back into the sewer. The popular video earned the rodent some notoriety online.

According to local media reports, a group of girls who found and reported the rat gave the firefighters a drawing they made of the rat surrounded by hearts.
