Letter: Behind closed doors?
The residents of Prescott need to know what the City Council is discussing, and perhaps agreeing upon, with Arizona Eco Development (AED). Constituents voted the council members into office to protect and guide this city through rapidly changing times and at a juncture where unprecedented and inadequately controlled development is occurring.
Why are these discussions being held behind closed doors? Why isn’t the council keeping their constituents up to date about AED’s proposed development in the Dells? When will residents be informed about preliminary decisions already made in terms of the future of this amazing natural resource? We first learned of this project almost two years ago, and yet still we know nothing; when will we know? The impacts to all residents of Prescott should be transparent. How many more council sessions closed to public attendance will there be?
To date, this is what has been implied by this lack of transparency: constituents (voters) just have to swallow Arizona Eco Development and the council discussing the future status of our much loved Granite Dells behind closed doors. Yet these are discussions that should rightly be in the public domain. The Granite Dells are part of Prescott’s heritage and future. They are not a gambling chip played by the highest bidder, who stands to make great profit in their development, at the expense of families, businesses and retirees of this great town.
Bring the public up to speed on these negotiations. Now.
