Letter: Chip seal – why?

Editor:

This method to resurface our streets has had me wondering for years, is it less expensive? It certainly is not, in my estimation, a better solution.

After many years sweeping this mess out of my gutter, driveway and garage, I felt a need to express my thoughts. The chips have found their way into my home, car tires, soles of shoes and I’m sure sewers and landfills.

What happened to the old fashioned tar application? It is still used to seal road cracks as well as an underlayment for the chip seal. So, why add a layer of stone that ends up somewhere other than where it is supposed to be?

Whoever invented this procedure should be forced to “clean up” this mess, not us.
