Chino Valley wrestling wins three-way section dual at Snowflake

SNOWFLAKE — Chino Valley’s wrestling team won a three-way Division III, Section IV dual meet on Wednesday, Jan. 9, besting Blue Ridge, 66-18, and topping host Snowflake, 42-28, as the 2018-19 season starts to wind down.

Individually, the Cougars were led by seven wrestlers who finished with 2-0 records on the day. They included…

• 113 pounds: Colby Evens;

• 120: Wade Payne (two pins);

• 132: Cody Jasper (two pins);

• 138: Zachary Giese (two pins);

• 145: Kyle Lund;

• 152: Clayton Stephenson (two pins);

• 160: Keller Rock; and

• HWT: Jimmy McCormick.

D-III, Section IV’s sectionals meet, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2, at Winslow High School, determines which squads and individual wrestlers from that 13-team section will qualify for the D-III state tournament Thursday, Feb. 7, and Friday, Feb. 8, at Prescott Valley Event Center.

Locals Prescott and Bradshaw Mountain are members of Section IV with Chino Valley.


Chino Valley will compete at the annual Doc Wright Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, in Winslow.

The regular season for the Cougars concludes at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, when they play host to the annual Legler Cup meet versus Prescott, Bradshaw Mountain and Mayer with county bragging rights on the line.
