A class on Home and Community Defense will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, in the upstairs meeting room at Little Dealer Little Prices, 2757 N. Truwood Drive, Prescott Valley.

Instructor Cat Thor will conduct the class.

The Prescott Valley Neighborhood Safety Group (PVNSG) with its 80 members works to create a town-wide emergency safety structure that involves police, fire and government agencies.

Every Sunday at 7 p.m., the group conducts a Radio Net to practice using FRS handheld radios. In the event of natural disasters, ham operators often are a vital link in communications, said Raymond Kolman, PVNSG member.

The public is invited to participate in the Sunday Radio Net events. Tune in on frequency 146.420 (2m) for those with an FCC license, and FRS 3 frequency 462.6125 (70cm) which does not require an FCC license.

“Our goal is to practice using our radios so in the event of a citywide emergency we will be able to help our city with communications,” Kolman said.

During the Viewpoint Fire, PVNSG had 25 people monitoring the radio waves, he added.
