Those in attendance, at American Legion Post 6 on Feb. 10, listen to the story of four chaplains who gave their lives to saves hundreds of lives in World War II. These four chaplains died serving their country Feb. 3, 1943. They died on the SS Dorchester after it was torpedoed by a German submarine in the north Atlantic. As the ship went down, many men were trapped and with no life vests remaining, the four chaplains gave them to other men in need. The four chaplains, each of a different religious belief, stayed to pray for the men trapped inside the ship. According to some reports, survivors heard multiple languages mixed in with the prayers of the chaplains. Only 230 of the 904 men aboard the ship were rescued.
