PHOENIX — After sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader to remain undefeated, the Yavapai College baseball team suffered its first loss of 2019, dropping a 5-1 decision to Central Arizona on Sunday afternoon.
Central Arizona (5-3, 0-0 ACCAC), receiving Top 20 preseason consideration by the NJCAA committee, lost to the same Roughriders club 7-2 just 18 hours before.
The Vaqueros plated single runs in the third and fourth innings Sunday, then put together a three-run rally in the fifth thanks to a two-RBI double by Zach Hogueisson that put the game out of reach for good.
Yavapai’s single tally came in the bottom of the second inning when Jack Silverman hit an RBI single, scoring Rocky Botello. At the time, it gave the Roughriders (3-1, 0-0 ACCAC) a 1-0 lead.
The club from Prescott has led in each of the first four games this season.
Botello was 3 for 4 with a run scored, while Silverman was 1 for 3 with the RBI and a walk. Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Logan Williams each had a hit.
No. 4 starter Matt Novis toed the mound for the Roughriders, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks in three innings pitched. The Tempe native threw 54 pitches, 28 of which were strikes.
Avery Jones pitched six strong innings for Central Arizona, recording four strikeouts while allowing six hits and the one run.
Yavapai will have a week of practice before heading south to play Phoenix College for a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 9.
The Roughriders are expected to pitch No. 1 starter Dom Hamel in game one, with a first pitch set for noon.
