Letter: Granite Dells
We moved here in large part because of the outdoor recreational opportunities in Prescott. The Granite Dells and its two lakes are the city’s centerpieces of outdoor activities and are, to a large degree, Prescott’s trademark. While I don’t expect Arizona Eco Development to give its property away for free, I do know that residential development never pays for itself because it throws off far less in taxes than it uses in services like roads, schools, police and fire.
Residential subdivisions are always subsidized by other taxpayers. Because of that, I think it is very fair to ask for some of the developer’s property to be set aside for public parkland as suggested by Save the Dells. And, if necessary, I have no problem supporting a bond issue to pay for part of it, even though as a conservative I am not particularly fond of taxes.
The Granite Dells is a beautiful, unique feature of Prescott. Saving some of it from development should be a priority.
