Letters: Most citizens want to Save the Dells
Most citizens want to Save the Dells
If there is any doubt that the vast majority of Prescott citizens agree with Save the Dells position, please consider the following data from discussions on this topic with 187 neighbors that opened their doors to me last week — 18 people (10 percent) had previously signed the petition; 159 additional people (85 percent) agreed with the petition but did not have a prior opportunity to sign; eight people (4 percent) saw my clipboard and did not want to be bothered; and only two people (1 percent) said they did not want to endorse Save the Dells.
Within this sample, 95 percent agree with Save the Dells but only 10 percent were included in the 5,000 signatures previously submitted to the Prescott City Council.
Furthermore, this 95 percent is adamant about their endorsement, as much of my time was spent simply listening to my neighbors’ heartfelt concerns over development in the Dells and around our Peavine and Iron King trails. Based on this experience, I am sure that the previously submitted 5,000 signatures represent only a small portion of the majority of citizens that truly want to see the Dells protected.
I hope that City Council and the Arizona Eco Development (AED) developer will listen to the citizens and negotiate an agreement to preserve the Granite Dells as natural open space in exchange for the many benefits of annexation that will be enjoyed by AED.
