PRESCOTT — It turns out that the Badgers were saving their best for last as No. 43 Prescott toppled No. 16 Mingus 6-3 in each side’s rousing regular season finale Monday afternoon.

This season wasn’t too kind to a Prescott boys tennis team that was on a five-match losing skid heading into Monday. Mingus, on the other hand, was boasting a 9-5 overall record but struggled in Section II play and was only one game ahead of Prescott in the standings.

Fortunately for the Badgers, they took full advantage of the opportunity to close out the season on a high note by taking two of three third-set tiebreakers on their home court. These wins ultimately decided the match as Prescott overtook Mingus for fifth place in Section II.

In doubles play, the Badgers’ No. 1 duo of Owen Thomas and Sam Stoecker defeated Mingus pair Jordan Finger and Brigham Peterson by an 8-6 score. Despite No. 2 Chaz Schott and Kolob Farnsworth dropping their match 9-3 to John Valentine and Travis O’Donnal, Merlin Porter and Jared Carter clinched the final doubles point for Prescott by downing Jack Zahoudanis and Ryan Russel 8-5.

Singles play provided the most drama as No. 2 Thomas and No.5 Porter battled tough in their matches to grind out tiebreaker victories over Valentine (1-6, 6-2, 12-10) and Zahoudanis (1-6, 6-4, 10-7), respectively. No. 1 Stoecker and No. 6 Carter also took their match by scores of 6-2, 6-1 and 7-6, 6-3, respectively, while No. 3 Schott fell to Finger 6-2, 6-0 and No. 4 Farnsworth fell to O’Donnal 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

UP NEXT

With the signature win, the Badgers wrap up their regular season schedule with a 4-10 overall record and a 3-4 record in Section II.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association is scheduled to release the singles, doubles and team state tournament brackets at some point in the next week.
