Herbert Raymond Voss

Herbert Raymond Voss died on April 10, 2019, at the age of 86.

Herb was a true Renaissance man. Throughout his 47 years of active theatre involvement, he was a stage manager, set designer, lighting designer, director and stagehand. Herb conveyed this love of theatre to the many students he mentored while at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, the American University in Washington, D.C., and the Madeira School in McLean, Virginia. He received a Fulbright Lecture Award and was named Outstanding Professor, Division of Fine Arts, in the course of his tenure at AU.

During his retirement of 20 years in Prescott, Herb acted in many PCA productions, starting with the lead role of Norman Thayer Jr. in On Golden Pond (2000) and ending with the role of Merriman, the butler in The Importance of Being Earnest (2018). Additionally, he played Matthew Brady in Inherit the Wind, FDR in Annie, Grandpa Joad in The Grapes of Wrath, and Captain Bracket in South Pacific, and appeared in many other productions. Herb sang bass in several Prescott choral groups including the Master Chorale, the Community Chorale, and the POPS Symphony Chorus. Further, Herb was a master craftsman, designing and building a barn, furniture and outdoor sculptures; he was an excellent photographer and painter; he was a wood turner and gardener. He was not a golfer but he golfed.

Herb’s greatest achievement was the devotion and love he gave to his family — Tamara, his wife of 60 years, and Stephanie — the daughter who has always been his pride and joy, as well as his son-in-law Bill, his sister-in-law Rhea, and his nephew Rod. He will be missed by all now and forevermore.
