Chino Valley baseball drops to 0-5 in 3A West region

CHINO VALLEY — Chino Valley’s baseball team again remained winless in 3A West region play on Friday, April 5, succumbing to Wickenburg, 5-3, at Nesbitt-Pratt Field.

With the setback, the 3A No. 17-ranked Cougars dipped to 0-5 in region, and they have lost five of their last six. They own a 6-5 record in power-point contests with seven games left in the regular season.

Chino Valley, the two-time defending 3A West champions, fell to a Wickenburg club that improved to 3-2 in region and 5-7 in power-point contests. The Wranglers upset No. 7-ranked Northwest Christian, 5-4, on March 21.

Kingman Academy currently sits atop the region standings at 5-1.

On Friday, Chino Valley trailed 3-1 through 2-1/2 innings before tying it up with two runs in the third. But the Cougars were shut out the rest of the way and the Wranglers tacked on two runs in the sixth to seal the win.

At pitcher, Tyler Carey took the loss in relief of starter Jayden Torres, who allowed two runs on one hit, struck out five and walked two, in 4-1/3 innings. Carey surrendered three runs on only two hits in 2-1/3 innings, walking three and striking out one.

Chino Valley plated its three runs on seven hits, led by Michael Paulus (2 for 2, two runs scored), Elijah Scordato (2 for 4, double), and Kaleb Burns (1 for 4, double, RBI, run scored).

For Wickenburg, Kade Peterson won at pitcher, allowing three runs on seven hits, striking out two and walking a pair in 6-1/3 innings. Drake Matney earned the save in two-thirds of an inning, striking out one. At the dish, Kegan Lindsay led the Wranglers, going 1 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs.

Chino Valley hopes to get off the schneid when it plays host to River Valley (1-4 West) for its next region game at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at Nesbitt-Pratt Field.

Wickenburg plays host to Trivium Prep (6-5) of the 2A conference at 3:45 p.m. Monday, April 8.
