Bergner claims Courier Battle of the Bracket title with Spartans victory in Elite 8

PRESCOTT VALLEY — Brian M. Bergner Jr., news/sports editor for The Daily Courier, has claimed the 2019 Battle of the Brackets title within the Courier newsroom competition.

Bergner (42-18) took sole possession of first place with 166 total points after Michigan State knocked off Duke 77-71 in overtime to advance to the Final Four. The win gave Bergner the 16 points he needed to overtake senior news editor Tim Wiederaenders.
Wiederaenders (43-17) sits in second with 160 total points, but only has Virginia left in his bracket, and does not have them advancing.
Bergner has Virginia advancing to the finals.
Courier photo editor Les Stukenberg (42-18) sits in third with 152 points and could pass Wiederaenders if Virginia advances to the finals.
Correctly picked Final Four games are worth 32 points.
Bergner currently sits second overall out of 50 players in this year’s Battle of the Brackets contest behind “mizzoutgr1,” who has 180 total points.
“Stkitts1” is third with 162 points, Wiederaenders is fourth overall and “duffspicks” is fifth with 160.
Courier community editor Douglas Graham is fourth overall within the newsroom competition with 144 points (36-24), sports reporter Doug Cook is fifth with 134 points (39-21) and Northern Arizona Suns coach Bret Burchard is sixth with 134 points (38-22).
