Concert to benefit food bank
Organizers promise eclectic mix of music

St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church in Chino Valley is hosting a Spirit of Abundance Concert next weekend to raise money for the Chino Valley Food Bank.

The church’s music director, Therese Holladay is spearheading it and said that she has done similar events in San Diego, but this will be the first benefit concert that St. Catherine’s has done. She had been in the position as music director for about five years and it was time for a benefit concert, which are always the best things to do, she said.

“I figured the Chino Valley Food Bank needs cash,” Holladay said. “They get many, many groceries, but they do not get cash very often.”

The concert is going to be a collaborative effort featuring the choirs from local churches such as Chino Valley United Methodist Church, Unity Church of Prescott, Grace Baptist Church, St. Catherine’s and members of Prescott Chorale all presenting popular spirituals as well as original pieces written by Unity Church’s music director Wayne Wright and the church’s organist, Monica Ashton.

Also performing at the concert will be the High Desert Flute Group and the Granite Mountain Bel Canto Singers presenting the audience with fun and popular classics including “Ava Maria,” “Granada,” “O Solo Mio,” and “Summertime.” Sandy Jones of Chino Valley United Methodist, Andrea Sexton and Barbara Freund are going to be accompanying the Bel Canto Singers.

“It’s an eclectic mix of fun music,” Holladay said. “There will be something for everyone.”

The doors open at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30. Tickets are a suggested donation of $12 and are available through the choir members or at the office of St Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church, 2062 Highway 89. The concert starts at 3 p.m.

Anyone is welcome even if they don’t donate, Holladay said.

“Sometimes just donating a smile and a blessing is good enough,” she said. “Their hearts are in the right place and they might not have available money.”

Seating is limited.
