Prescott wins 2018 season-opening mountain bike race in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF — Prescott’s Division I mountain biking team opened the 2018 season with an impressive statement, winning the Arizona Interscholastic Cycling League’s (AICL) first race of the 2018 season at Fort Tuthill County Park.
On the 5.9-mile loop course, the defending D-I state runner-up Badgers compiled 3,939 points, just ahead of second-place Cactus Shadows (3,906 points). BASIS Prescott was fourth (3,667), Tri-City College Prep was seventh (3,361) and Bradshaw Mountain was 13th (2,319).
Individually, in the girls’ varsity race, Prescott junior Zaydie Croy placed fourth out of 12 riders with an overall time of 1:22:02, finishing behind winner Lily Vitt of El Grupo Composite (1:18:19), in the three-lap race. Chino Valley senior Phoebe Dunn registered seventh in 1:27:43.
In the two-lap JV-2 girls’ race, Prescott sophomore Samantha Doyle nabbed fourth among 32 riders in 1:01:33. In the freshman race, Prescott’s Reilly Phelan won the two-lap race in 58:29, edging runner-up Ellie Thompson of Flagstaff (58:36).
VARSITY BOYS
BASIS Prescott junior Theodore Fabian claimed runner-up honors in the 22-rider field of varsity boys’ riders Sunday in Flagstaff. In the four-lap race, he posted a total time of 1:28:24, 1 minute behind victor Zachary Fernau of White Mountains Composite (1:27:18).
Tri-City Prep seniors Ethan Krafft (fifth, 1:32:59) and Kevin Anderson (eighth, 1:34:25) finished in the Top 10.
Prescott junior Bryce Vaughan took 11th place in 1:36:47.
UP NEXT
The second of this season’s five AICL races occurs Sunday, Sept. 23, at Pioneer Park’s Brownlow Trail in Prescott. This race features a 6.3-mile loop.
