Lawsuit filed over protest outside 2017 Trump rally in Phoenix

Smoke billows after police used tear gas on protesters Aug. 22, 2017, outside a rally held by President Donald Trump in downtown Phoenix. Two advocacy groups filed an excessive-force lawsuit on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, against the Phoenix Police Department over the conduct of officers during a protest outside the rally. The suit alleges officers deliberately targeted anti-Trump protesters and showed a preference toward Trump supporters. The police department declined to comment on the lawsuit.
