Prescott mashes Mingus, remains in playoff hunt
COTTONWOOD — By the time mid-October arrives, high school volleyball teams in Arizona are hoping that they’re reaching their peak performance in the quest for making state.
In Prescott’s case, there’s little doubt.
The 4A No. 19-ranked Badgers won their fourth straight Grand Canyon region match on Tuesday, Oct. 16, besting Mingus, 3-1, to keep their playoff hopes alive.
With the 25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 28-26 victory, Prescott owns an 8-6 overall record and an 8-2 mark in region, putting the Badgers all alone in second place behind unbeaten Flagstaff (10-0 region). Mingus dipped to 4-11 overall and 1-9 in region.
For Prescott on Tuesday, Kate Radavich pieced together an incredible match, recording 19 kills, 13 digs and three service aces. Setter Tessa Rothfuss followed, tallying five kills, six aces, 19 assists and 11 digs.
Sabina Dimaano-Simmons (15 digs, four aces) and Angie Jennison (13 digs, two aces) stood out defensively.
Prescott has three matches left in the regular season. The Badgers visit non-region foe and No. 7-ranked Deer Valley at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Glendale, followed by a big region match versus first-place and No. 4 Flagstaff at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18. Prescott finishes up with a region match against rival Bradshaw Mountain (9-5 overall, 6-3 region) at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Prescott Valley Event Center.
Mingus, which has lost seven straight region matches, ends its season at Coconino on Oct. 18, and against Lee Williams on Oct. 23 in Cottonwood. First serve is at 6 p.m. for both matches.
