BAGDAD — Riley Young caught three touchdowns passes, Brady Finnerty had two sacks and a forced fumble, and the No. 7-ranked Bagdad football team scored 50 points in the first half to beat Mayer 64-14 in their regular season finale Friday night.
It is the fourth win in the last five games for Bagdad (6-3, 4-1 West), which lost 28-26 to rival Salome two weeks ago and have outscored their opponents 132-14 since.
“This was a well-rounded game for us,” Bagdad head coach Dalton Mills said. “We’ll just have to see where we stand in state after this win.”
The 1A state brackets are scheduled to be released at some point this weekend, with the Sultans positioning themselves for a potential home game in the first round next week against likely No. 9 Joseph City, No. 10 Ray or No. 11 Duncan.
If Bagdad can get past next week’s first round of state, they may face Salome in a rematch depending on seeding.
Other standouts in Friday night’s win include Carson Jeans, who had 11 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Connor Watson was 5 for 5 for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
Rocky Sandoval spent some time under center as well, completing 4 of 4 passes for 38 yards and a touchdown.
The final rankings are scheduled to be released by the Arizona Interscholastic Association tonight, with the state playoff field finalized likely by Sunday.
