The Prescott Chorale is putting on a special concert, performing nothing but pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach featuring guest soloists and the new Arizona Philharmonic Orchestra.

Artistic Director Dennis Houser had a couple of reasons he wanted to put on this show, titled “Magnificent! – An All Bach Concert.”

“Bach is one of the most prolific composers ever,” Houser said. “(He) just requires your understanding of how music goes together.”

The concert starts at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 2000 Shepherds Lane, with a pre-concert talk at 2.

Pieces in the performance include a Chaconne with a piano accompaniment, “Brandenburg Concerto No. 1,” a small motet and the “Magnificat in D,” which Houser said is one of Bach’s most magnificent pieces. The “Magnificat in D” includes five solo artists, three of whom are graduates of or attend Northern Arizona University and one is from California, he said. Those soloists are tenor Michael Fausto, mezzo-soprano Mary Kray, alto Melanie McCally, bass Talen Swan and soprano Mariana Velasco. Velasco is a past recipient of a Prescott Chorale Young Artist Scholarship.

Part of the “Brandenburg Concerto No. 1” performance will be a unique instrument called a piccolo violin, Houser said.

“It’s a specialized instrument because of the music it’s written for,” he said.

Houser noted he specifically chose all of the music for the performance because it has not historically been performed in Prescott before. He feels it is incumbent on him and the Prescott Chorale to present either new music or music that has not been performed within the last 10 years to the people in the area, he said.

Tickets for the performance are $21 for adults, $5 for students and free for children. For more information on the Prescott Chorale, sample recordings or to purchase tickets, visit
