Yavapai College Rotaract, a community service and leadership club sponsored by the Sunup Rotary Club of Prescott, teamed up with YC students in other clubs to collect nearly 800 food items to serve students facing food insecurity.

Rotaract initiated a philanthropy campaign, “Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat,” that attracted the efforts of YC students from five clubs, including the Native American Club, Phi Theta Kappa, College Honors Program, Trio Student Support Services, and I AM YC. The students trick-or-treated door-to-door on Oct. 31 asking for non-perishable food items instead of candy from the residents of the Pronghorn Ranch development in Prescott Valley.

“I have enjoyed the ‘Trick or Treat so Others can Eat’ event since my freshman year of high school with the Bradshaw Mountain High School Interact club, and now continue to enjoy this event as a part of The Yavapai College Rotaract club,” said Rotaract student president Paul Schafffer. “Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored club that is driven to help build effective leadership and professional skills, inspire friendship and collaboration, and to address the challenges within the community.”

In addition to the 616 items collected on Halloween, Sunup Rotary gathered more than 50 more items and Maid to Order provided just over 100 more. The food items, including canned goods, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, vegetables, cereal, beans, rice and more, were donated to the Yavapai College Food Pantry for the benefit of YC students in need.

Since starting in Oct. 2017, the YC Food Pantry has fed over 178 individuals (students and their families) with more than 2,100 meals.

“Student volunteers run the Food Pantry through the leadership of the I AM YC Club,” said Yavapai College Student Engagement Coordinator Janice Soutee. “Other clubs that participate are the Student Leadership Council, College Honors Program, Rotaract, Native American Club, and the Juggling Club.”
