Territorial Early Childhood Center volunteers important

The Territorial Early Childhood Center is a busy place! The excitement for learning is contagious for all.

As teachers, we not only help shape the hopes and dreams of our students, but also inspire their attitudes toward their future academic success. With that being said, though, we could not do our job without the support of our volunteers. They are an important part of the overall success.

I would like to share comments made by the staff about the volunteers that come into their rooms:

“As soon as a volunteer walks through the door the kids light up with the biggest smiles! Our volunteers are busy and jump right in stapling phonics books, getting art projects ready for all the students, putting labels in spiral notebooks for sight words and phonograms, tying shoelaces, putting ponytails and braids back in, guiding literacy groups, directing craft projects, and helping the students with flashcards to practice letter naming, numbers, sight words and colors. They love the children and the children love them. They are willing to do whatever we ask of them without question, and if that isn’t enough they ask, “What else can I do to help?” They go above and beyond in many ways, which shows in their ongoing dedication to our children. They are amazing, a true blessing!”

While all of our volunteers are so valuable and appreciated, we have one volunteer that is extra special to us, Janet Elliott (also known as Ms. Janet Grandma). She has been volunteering at TECC in the centers program, where her daughter teaches, for the past 6½ years. She is at school almost every day helping the kids with their classwork along with helping out in the cafeteria and on the playground. She buys supplies for the class when she sees a need and is willing to help out wherever she can.

The first day she volunteered, she said she wanted to help with only photo copying and filing, but by the end of the day she was having so much fun with the kids that she wanted to work with them instead and has been doing it ever since.

When asked to describe her the students said, “Ms. Janet Grandma is nice, pretty and happy.” It is evident that Janet loves working with the students; she is truly a delight to have as part of our team at Territorial Early Childhood Center. She is a perfect example of the quote by Deann Hollis that says, “The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.”

All of our volunteers are making a difference in the lives of our children and we appreciate each one of them so much! Our students and staff are truly blessed by the service that our volunteers give. “Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.”

We love ALL of our volunteers and are very fortunate to have them join us in our educational journey with children!
