Orange-Date-Nut Bread

This is an old recipe I got from an elderly lady who used to live in our apartment complex.

Our family has always liked it, I hope yours will too.

Orange-Date-Nut Bread

Juice and rind of one orange

1/2 cup dates

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 tablespoons soft butter

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 cups flour

1 egg

1/2 cup walnuts(chopped)

1/2 cup pecans (chopped)

Mix butter and sugar till creamy, then add vanilla and egg, beating well. Add in dry ingredients (except soda) to batter.

Squeeze juice of orange into a measuring cup,then add enough boiling water to juice to make one cup, stir soda into juice and water mixture.

Grind orange rind and dates enough to make one cup. Stir juice and ground fruit into mixture. Fold in the nuts and blend well.

Pour into 1 large loaf pan or 3 small (3”x6”) loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until middle is firm.
