Anyone who has ever said, “I would like to take an art class,” is invited to advance their decision-making process by visiting YC’s 3D visual art studios on Friday, Nov. 16.

The metal sculpture, lapidary, jewelry, woodworking and ceramics studios at the Yavapai College Prescott campus are opening their doors between 2 and 6 p.m. The goal of the open house is to encourage prospective students to discover the opportunities YC offers for creative enrichment.

“We want to let the community know we’re here and what we’re doing,” said Kris Waid-Jones, a metal sculpture and 3D design professor at YC who also coordinates the 3D visual arts program for the college.

Along with touring the 3D visual art studio spaces at YC, located in buildings 5, 16 and 17 and 18, open house attendees are invited to watch and engage with students working on fall-semester projects and ask questions of lab technicians and art instructors who will be on hand.

The 3D visual arts open house coincides with the opening of a student art exhibition titled “Emerging Artists” at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the Prescott campus art gallery. Visitors to the gallery show may see something they like and want to find out how it was done, Waid-Jones said. They can do that with a short walk or shuttle ride from the gallery to the appropriate studio.

“It’s pretty much just come and investigate,” said Waid-Jones, who joined YC’s visual arts faculty earlier this year.

A sculptor with more than 20 years of teaching experience — the last five at both Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University — Waid-Jones said the metal sculpture lab at YC is equal to if not better than those of his previous employers. “This is one of the best-equipped and well laid-out studios that I’ve been in for a very long time,” Waid-Jones said.

All are welcome to the 3D Visual Arts open house on Nov. 16. Get directions to the studios via a Prescott campus map available on the YC website. Visit yc.edu and search for Prescott campus map. A balloon trail will identify the visual art studio locations on open house day. A shuttle will provide transportation between the YC art gallery and the art studios as well.
