The public comments regarding the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) of the proposed KMC project have been published on the BLM site: Arizona-Hassayampa FO-D01-BLM-AZ-P010-2017/documents.
Comments are overwhelmingly opposed, many with highly researched insights to the shortcomings of the EA. Letters opposed or with serious concerns, include those from the City of Prescott, two Yavapai County supervisors, the Center for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club, Arizona Fish & Game, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and three Prescott homeowners associations among numerous other groups and individuals.
To paraphrase from a few comments: before deciding anything, further independent third-party analysis of air quality impacts, public safety impacts from increased industrial truck traffic, cumulative groundwater impacts from water pumping, use of thorough, accurate testing and analytical techniques to determine the amount of erionite detected and verification of KMC’s expertise/experience in mining this substance.
BLM’s responses to public comments and preparation of the final EA is estimated to be completed by winter 2018-19. There are so many suspect issues with this project that could significantly impact thousands of people from Kirkland to Prescott and beyond when considering the impacts to tourism. A thorough and well-advised examination by the BLM must be pursued for the safety and health of all communities in Yavapai County.
I strongly encourage all residents of Yavapai County to review the published comments and continue to contact the BLM and our elected officials to responsibly and thoroughly investigate the KMC proposal in order to ensure the future health and welfare of our community.
