Prescott’s mountain biking team captured Division 1 state runner-up honors for the second consecutive fall on Nov. 4 in Waddell, finishing the Arizona Interscholastic Cycling League’s 2018 season little more than 100 points behind champion Cactus Shadows of Cave Creek.
Badgers JV-1 sophomore rider Ryan DePue won an individual state championship jersey with 1,645 total points, and four Prescott cyclists took home series medals.
As for local riders in the varsity boys category, BASIS Prescott junior Theodore Fabian placed third overall with 1,711 points, and Tri-City College Prep senior Ethan Krafft was fifth (1,650 points). Others standing out were Tri-City College Prep senior Kevin Anderson (10th; 1,553 points) and Prescott junior Bryce Vaughan (14th; 1,511 points).
In JV-1 boys, besides DePue, BASIS Prescott sophomore Nathan Bigelow was fourth with 1,570 points. For JV1 D-2 boys, Chino Valley junior Caleb Hill was 14th (1,370 points).
For the freshman D-1 boys, Prescott’s Ethan Wright snared runner-up honors with 1,505 points, while BASIS Prescott’s Thomas Fabian and Jimmy McClelland nabbed third- and fifth-place, respectively, with 1,487 points and 1,450 points.
In freshman D-2 boys, Chino Valley’s Preston Norbury was third overall (1,487 points).
For the varsity girls, Prescott junior Zaydie Croy placed fifth overall with 1,650 cumulative points in four series races (Chino Valley senior Phoebe Dunn took eighth with 1,587 points). In JV-1 girls, Prescott sophomore Grace Crothers nabbed 11th place overall with 1,433 points (Tri-City College Prep junior Tate Coggins was 14th).
In JV-2 girls, Prescott sophomore Samantha Doyle placed fourth overall with 1,450 points (Tri-City College Prep’s Abby Macdonald was fifth with 1,417 points and Chino Valley’s Annah Fortner was seventh with 1,349 points).
As for the freshman girls’ category, Prescott’s Reilly Phelan was state runner-up (1,505 points) to El Grupo Composite’s Brayden James (1,506 points).
Prescott registered a total of 15,811 points in four races this fall, including races run in Flagstaff, Prescott, Fountain Hills and Waddell. The series’ third race at Fort Huachuca was cancelled. Cactus Shadows notched the state championship-winning total of 15,915 points.
The Badgers won the Flagstaff race Sept. 9 at Fort Tuthill County Park before placing second on Sept. 23 at Pioneer Park in Prescott, second on Oct. 21 at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Fountain Hills and second on Nov. 4 at White Tank Mountain Regional Park in Waddell.
Other tri-city area teams that placed in Division 1’s final standings included BASIS Prescott (fifth place; 14,578 points), Tri-City College Prep (ninth; 12,673) and Bradshaw Mountain (13th; 10,769).
