Letter: Truth always prevails

First, I must state I am a child of the 60’s, the Love generation.

As we were protesting against the Vietnam War, marching for Civil Rights, championing equality for all, I never, in my wildest imagination believed that today, in my seventies, the progress that we fought so hard for has been rolled back and denigrated. The blood, sweat, and tears shed to combat injustice, hatred and prejudice seem to have fallen on fallow ground. Aggrandizement, “winning” at all costs, indecency and hatred have reared their ugly heads and our nation is divided more than ever. Many mornings I don’t want to wake up to this nightmare. I haven’t gotten over the election where Trump claimed a mandate though he didn’t win the popular vote or earn the consensus of the American public.

There, I said it. My deepest, darkest thoughts have been exposed and I will not “get over it.” I have much to hope for despite the apparent condition of the world. Good men will rise up and be counted. Millions more will vote because their very life depends upon it. My beloved dog and soulmate will remain by my side and remind me that there is much to be joyful about. I will laugh and cry with my friends, grow flowers, sing and build a community with progressive friends. We will fight injustice and build a new narrative because we can.

Truth always prevails and will win in the end. Knowing that, I have much to be thankful for.
