The Arizona Interscholastic Association officially announced that Arizona State University will host the 5A and 6A conference Arizona high school football state championships this fall, according to a release. The games are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. The AIA is guaranteed two championship games at Sun Devil Stadium, mostly likely the 5A and 6A contests, but the university will determine the feasibility of a third game by the end of summer. The sites for the 1A, 2A and 3A championship games will remain the same, with Maricopa High School hosting the 1A title Saturday, Nov. 10, and Campo Verde High School hosting 2A and 3A on Friday, Nov. 23. The 2018 state semifinals will be hosted by additional schools this fall. Arcadia and Chaparral high schools will host the 2A semifinals, while North Canyon and Shadow Mountain high schools will host 3A.
Former Roughrider goalkeeper Brett Bentley named Evansville assistant coach
Former Yavapai College men’s soccer player Brett Bentley was recently named the top assistant coach for Evansville University, a NCAA Division One program in Evansville, Indiana. Bentley, a member of the 2002 NJCAA national champion Roughriders club, has served in a coaching role for Adams State, Lubbock Christian University, Northwest Christian University, Corban University and Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
Prescott Mile High Open set for July 13-15; registration deadline is July 6
Registration for the Prescott Mile High Open is now available to tennis players. The USTA level two sanctioned tournament is set to begin Friday, July 13, and run through Sunday, July 15, at Yavapai College Tennis Center in Prescott. The tournament features open age divisions in singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories. All players are guaranteed at least two matches. The tournament has also added a junior division for 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U. Also included are NTRP (3.0-4.5) divisions. Mast, Kilburg take 1st place at Jerry Germain Memorial Horseshoe tourney
Jay Mast and Linda Kilburg claimed first place at the 2018 Jerry Germain Memorial Horseshoe Tournament on June 23 in Prescott Valley. American Legion Post 108 hosted the tournament at Central Arizona Horseshoe Club at American Legion Park in Prescott Valley. Fourteen two-person teams competed in the double-elimination event. Sherri Ochoa and Ed Hammersmith took second overall, while Kim Ramey and Gregg Reed were third. Proceeds of the tournament were donated toward supporting the American Legion’s missions in the community, supporting veterans and local youth.
Junior Match Play Championship set for July 23-26 in Prescott
The 2018 Prescott City Junior Match Play Championship is scheduled to take place Monday through Thursday, July 23 to 26, at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott. Entry fee is $25 per golfer, which includes lunch, practice balls, green fees and trophies. Players must be 18 years of age or younger as of July 23, 2018, and must be able to play 18 holes of golf without supervision. Caddies, spectators and parents are not allowed on the course. Spectators are allowed only on holes No. 1, No. 9 and No. 18. Registration packets can be picked up in the Antelope Hills pro shop and are due by 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 17. 2nd annual NAZ Suns Basketball Camp set for July 27 in Prescott Valley
The Northern Arizona Suns are scheduled to host their second annual NAZ Suns Basketball Camp from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, July 27, at the Prescott Valley Event Center. The camp includes skill training by NAZ Suns’ basketball staff, two tickets to the Suns home opener, completion certificate, T-shirt and a free lunch.
