Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist Kara Grainger is performing for two nights this weekend at the Bird Cage Saloon.

Though she’s never played in Prescott, Grainger said she has performed in Tucson and Phoenix. Having released a new album, “Living With Your Ghost,” she booked a bunch of shows around the country trying to get the music out there as much as possible, she said.

Grainger began performing at 16 years old, joining her brother and forming the band Papa Lips before signing with Australian label Craving Records and releasing a debut album “Grand and Green River” which was co-produced in the United States. She has since relocated to Los Angeles and said she’s pretty happy touring and playing her music.

“It still remains to be one of the things that I love to do the most in this life,” she said. “I like to create and … there’s a sense of satisfaction when you write, create, play your music. I kind of equate it to making a piece of art or building a house and looking back on it and in the sense of achievement that goes with that as well.”

Grainger is set to perform at 7 p.m. Friday, June 15, and at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Bird Cage Saloon, 160 S. Montezuma St. There is no cover charge.

The name of the album, which was released in May, is also the title track and one of her favorite songs she wrote at the time, Grainger said. It sets up the right theme for the whole album and is retrospective in thinking about people from the past and her journey in the US for the past decade, she said. It’s a little bit of looking back in order to move forward, Grainger said.

She and her band are pretty unique, with her having grown up in Sydney, Australia and growing up with blues and soul music and her band being musicians from Los Angeles, she said.

“We’ll be there for the two nights and playing a lot of the new material off my album, but also some of my older, bluesy, funky soul stuff as well,” Grainger said. “There’s plenty of music.”
