Dorothy Mae (Miller) ‘Dot’ Olson

Dorothy Mae (Miller) “Dot” Olson, 86, a Prescott resident for nearly 60 years, passed away June 1, 2018, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she had recently moved to live with her daughter, Julie Hibbard.

Dot was born Nov. 15, 1931, in Lehi, Utah. She and her siblings became orphans as young children and grew up in separate homes. Dot was adopted by Walter and Lura Guenther and went to live with them and their daughter, Marge, on their farm in southeastern Kansas. Fortunately, Dot and her siblings were able to reunite as young adults and were in touch again for the years that followed.

After graduation from high school, Dot met Kansan Jim Olson, and they married in 1949. The Olsons farmed in southeastern Kansas, until they moved to Prescott, Arizona, for health reasons in 1962. Jim and Dot owned Olson Furniture Store, until Jim’s retirement.

For many years after their move to Prescott, Jim and Dot provided foster care for children in need.

Besides helping with the family business, Dot held jobs in Prescott, beginning with the Yavapai County Treasurer’s Office and then teaching at a local preschool. She moved on to working for Prescott Unified School District schools, including Granite Mountain and Prescott High School, in various capacities. Dot also gave time to her church, Gideons International and other service organizations, People Who Care, among them.

Dot’s survivors include her sister, Marge Carlson; her daughter, Julie (Burnie) Hibbard; her son, Dan (Cathy) Olson; and five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 1991.

A celebration of Dot’s life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Prescott First Church of the Nazarene, located at the corner of Willow Creek Road and Green Lane in Prescott. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made in Dot’s name to Gideons International.
