Defending champ Salpointe Catholic nets 5 goals, will face Flagstaff for title
Kalista Kakou had two goals, Paloma Teran and Isabella Almazan each scored and the defending state champion Salpointe Catholic girls’ soccer team will defend their crown after a 5-0 rout over Prescott on Tuesday night.
The loss snaps a six-match winning streak for the No. 6-ranked Badgers, which suffer elimination in the 4A state semifinals for the second consecutive season.
Phone calls seeking comment from Prescott head coach Paul Campuzano were not returned by press time.
Kakou gave the No. 2-ranked Lancers (20-1-1, 3-0-1 Kino) a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute in Gilbert before Teran added another score to make it 3-0 in the 33rd minute.
In the second half, Kakou scored her second goal of the night in the 41st minute and Almazan completed the rout with a goal in the 53rd minute.
Salpointe Catholic has won 16 straight matches dating back to Dec. 2 when they lost 4-1 to Catalina Foothills.
And with Catalina Foothills losing to No. 1-ranked Flagstaff 1-0 on Tuesday, the Eagles and Salpointe Catholic will face each other in the state finals, a rematch of last year’s semifinal that went tied after two overtimes.
The Lancers advanced on penalty kicks (4-1) and won the championship with a 4-0 win over Thunderbird just three days later.
Salpointe Catholic and Flagstaff are scheduled to play Saturday, Feb. 10, at Williams Field High School. Kickoff for the state title is set for 11:30 a.m.
