CHINO VALLEY — Playing its fourth of five games in a 10-day span on Wednesday, Dec. 19, Chino Valley’s girls basketball team looked no worse for wear, beating Bagdad, 34-25, to extend its winning streak to three.

Guards Abbie Golden and Rudy Rodriguez led the 3A No. 24-ranked Cougars, scoring nine points and eight points, respectively. Post Lindsey ten Berge followed with a team-high 10 rebounds and netted two pretty buckets on assists from Crystal Sanchez.

Coury Hawks chipped in with six rebounds, four steals and two assists at the Cougars’ main gym.

Chino Valley carried a 22-8 lead into halftime, although Bagdad would piece together a bit of a rally in the final 16 minutes of regulation.

“The girls started strong, but they ended up playing into Bagdad’s hands in the second half,” first-year Chino Valley coach Catherine Metz said. “We needed to value possessions more and take care of the ball.

“But we are excited about strong contributions from our bench, and we are happy to have finished with another win.”

The Sultans, who were ranked 18th in the lower-enrollment 1A heading into Wednesday’s contest, lost their third consecutive game after this Yavapai County clash. They now have a record of 5-4 in power-point games.

Meanwhile, Chino Valley moved above .500 with a 4-3 mark in power-point tilts.
