Phoenix-based and family-owned Pruitt’s Fine Furniture is moving into the site of the former Prescott Valley Kmart, 7550 Highway 89.
The sale closed Thursday, Dec. 13, said Pruitt’s Fine Furniture General Manager Christy Smith.
The owner and his family have owned a second home in the Prescott area for decades, have always considered themselves a part of the community and have always wanted to provide good, affordable furniture for families in Northern Arizona, Smith said.
The Town of Prescott Valley has been terrific to work with, she added. “Their leadership and government is so business friendly. The cultural vibe they are creating there was just perfect.”
With the Prescott Valley Event Center and the Yavapai Regional Medical Center East Campus behind the building and Highway 69 in front of it, providing a corridor to all of Northern Arizona, the store will be in a great location to serve people in the immediate community as well as the entire region, she said.
The goal is to do a complete renovation of the building, Smith said. Construction began moments after the close of the sale and crews have already begun redoing the roof and parking lot, she said. Then comes the interior that will have a little more than 100,000 square feet of showroom floor.
“We’re shooting for an aggressive timeline but I think it’s doable,” she said. “We’re looking to open the store to the public around early March.”
Smith said she foresees starting with about 20 employees who will be hired locally.
The search for those employees will start when the company has a better handle on timing and will advertise a range of positions including warehouse, customer service, sales, management and delivery drivers, she said.
Pruitt’s Fine Furniture has been in business for more than 60 years with two Phoenix locations on East Thomas Road and West Washington Street. Many of its customers are generational, shopping there because their parents and grandparents shopped at the store, Smith said.
“Because we’re a family-owned business and we own our properties, we are able to just keep margins very low and provide just the highest-quality furniture at the lowest prices,” she said.
“Even more important than that is we’re just known for our exceptional customer service and that’s why folks come back to us generation after generation and it really is exciting for us to bring that level of customer service and care to Northern Arizona.”
