SUPERIOR — Defending 1A state runner-up Superior scored 16 unanswered points against Bagdad in the second half on Friday night, as the Panthers rallied to beat Bagdad, 24-12.
The Sultans’ record dropped to 2-1, while Superior improved to 3-0.
Bagdad trailed 8-6 at halftime before Zaac Vazquez scored on a 12-yard touchdown reception to hand the visitors a 12-8 lead. However, Superior would take control from there.
“We couldn’t put another drive together after that,” Sultans coach Dalton Mills said. “It was a hard-fought, defensive battle. Sometimes, this is how it goes.”
Bagdad quarterback Rocky Sandoval completed 6 of 13 passes for 93 yards and two TDs. Vazquez hauled in four catches for 33 yards and a TD. Owen Barton also had a TD catch, one that had put Bagdad in front 6-0 early in the contest.
The Sultans, who lost to Superior in the state semifinals in 2017, will play host to defending 1A state champion Williams (2-0) at 7 p.m. Sept. 7.
Superior (3-0) plays host to Arete Prep at 7 p.m. Sept. 7.
