Letter: Fake news

Editor:

With all the talk lately about fake news, I thought I’d offer this definition of fake news, what it is and what it isn’t.

If some hacker in Romania makes up a totally fictitious story, gets it posted on a legitimate-looking internet site, and it gets circulated in the e-media world, that’s fake news.

If somebody publishes a story based on verifiable facts you don’t like, that’s not fake news.

If a news outlet picks up on selected facts in order to support a political agenda, that may be a misuse of journalistic responsibility, but it’s not fake news.
