ELFRIDA — Defending state semifinalist Bagdad rolled to a 66-0 victory over Valley Union in the opening week of the 2018 football season for 1A.
Putting together a dominant defensive performance, the Sultans leaned on Cort Chapin, who recorded six solo tackles and five assists, and added two fumble recoveries and a sack. Kaylab Owings snagged two interceptions, one of which he returned for 26 yards.
Offensively, Bagdad didn’t look half bad either. The Sultans racked up 288 yards rushing and 150 yards passing. Carson Jeans provided a big boost, running for 140 yards and two TDs on 15 carries. Elias Jauregui was equally impressive, rushing nine times for 88 yards and four TDs.
Freshman Connor Watson started at quarterback for Bagdad, completing 9 of 15 passes for 123 yards and a TD.
“It was a good start to the season, and we are looking forward to Joe City [in Week 2],” Bagdad coach Dalton Mills said. “It was nice to get some momentum started.”
Bagdad (1-0 overall record) will face Joseph City (0-0) at Northern Arizona University’s Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25.
Valley Union (0-1) will play host to defending 1A state runner-up Superior at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, in Elfrida, southeast of Tucson.
