Motorhome hits church, driver jailed for alleged DUI

Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) deputies responded to a report about a motorhome colliding with a church building in the 20,000 block of Club Lane in Cordes Lakes around noon on Saturday, Aug. 12, according to a news release from YCSO Media Coordinator Dwight D’Evelyn.

Deputies were told of a crashing noise heard during the church service, and upon investigation they found a motorhome had hit the building as well as a car in the church parking lot.

Stephen Merrigan, 58, of Cordes Lakes, was identified as the driver of the motorhome.

Merrigan allegedly admitted to driving his motorhome from his house and into the church parking lot, damaging the parked car and hitting the building while attempting a turn as well as drinking a six-pack of beer before driving the vehicle.

Following a field sobriety test, which Merrigan allegedly performed poorly while showing signs and symptoms of impairment, he was booked into the Camp Verde Detention Center on a charge of driving/in actual physical contact of a vehicle while under the influence. He remains in-custody.
